Many of our customers are using the free Qtranslate translation plugin on their websites. Unfortunately though, this plugin hasn’t been updated to the latest version of WordPress for a long time. So what do we do now? Do you delete the plugin and go on without translations? Do you buy an other plugin and fill in all the translation texts again ? No more chaos will explain how you will be able to keep your translation texts with a new free plugin which works perfectly with the latest WordPress version 3.9.1!
What is Qtranslate?
Qtranslate is a free WordPress plugin which is used to make a multi-lingual website. Your editor looks exactly the same as you are used to, the only difference when you use Qtranslate is the choice between tabs. For each language you use a different tab where you can fill in your content. Once you filled in all the tabs you simply click save and your website will detect different languages. You can add the language flags easily as well by adding them in a widget. With this plugin every one is able to make a multi-lingual website, IF and only if it would work correctly with the latest version of WordPress.
What could happen if i do use Qtranslate with WordPress 3.9.1?
Of course no website is the same so many things can happen if you use the old Qtranslate plugin with the newest version of WordPress. At first you get an error message what says “The qTranslate Editor has disabled itself because it hasn’t been tested with your WordPress version yet. This is done to prevent WordPress from malfunctioning. You can reenable it by clicking here (may cause data loss! Use at own risk!). To remove this message permanently, please update qTranslate to the corresponding version”. Well we know there is no corresponding version available, so that won’t work. You could edit the qtranslate plugin yourself, what worked until WordPress 3.8, but after some automatic updates that fix didn’t do the trick anymore. Yes your website translations were enabled again, but when you looked at your website layouts looked different or even got deleted!
What can i use as an alternative of Qtranslate?
Now fortunately there is a solution! The new free plugin is called MqTranslate and works perfectly with WordPress 3.9.1 and higher. The great thing about this plugin is that it works exactly the same as the old Qtranslate plugin. So if you are used to Qtranslate you won’t have to read into new features to use MqTranslate. One extra benefit of using the MqTranslate plugin is that you can use your existing content from your website!
How do i make the migration from Qtranslate to MqTranslate?
As with all updates or migrations always make a back up of your website and database before getting started so you are sure you won’t loose any content or settings when something goes wrong while updating.
After you have made a back up of your website you can start the migration by disabling the Qtranslate plugin in your plugin directory on your dashboard. Then go and get a new plugin, search for the mqTranslate plugin. The plugin you are looking for is made by Xhaleera. When you found the right plugin click to install and activate it. Now you can delete the Qtranslate plugin. When the deleting of the Qtranslate plugin is complete go to your language settings page in your dashboard and enable the correct languages which you have been using before, save them and your website should work perfect again!
